Video Games and Violence

Hello everyone !

Let's discuss a controversial topic (instead of spamming the forum for GIPS).

Question :
Do you think playing video games increases the players' tendencies for violence ?

Sub-questions :
- What type of video games may have an impact on the players' tendencies for violence ?
- What age may be particularly affected by video games ?
- Should we have higher restrictions on video games sells, such as rated M games ?

Discuss below. Add your arguments. Reply to others. Clashing is permitted. No spam, no hate.

What do you do when there is an evil you cannot defeat by just means ? Do you stain your hands with evil to destroy evil, or do you remain steadfastly just and righteous even if it means surrendering to evil ?

i would say, it depends from game to game, it's true that you can get more violent when ya play a war game and then suddenly your father puts off the television, ur reaction will be lots more intense, that im sure. But when ya play those games i would suggest to parents to treat you otherwise, instead of putting tv immediately off they should ask: "darling, within 5 more mins, ya gotta quit".
By doing that there won't be any violence at all, you just need to treaten the person otherwise.

About the sub-questions:
- war games
- kid games for kids, war games for 12-16 year old, depends how intense the games are.
- and last question: there shouldn't be higher restrictions on selling video games, if ur very young ur parents buy it for you, if they do not agree you never will be able to play. So even when you would buy the game without ur parents knowing it, they will see it when ur playing it and pick it off and return it.

well, it depends of what kind of video games you play...
Happiness doesn't buy money

of course not....well depends if the player has mental problems but other than that nope

lennert123, you gave an example about war games. How about RPG or adventure games ? Wouldn't you be angry if your parents close your Pokémon or The Legend of Zelda game (which aren't really war games, but have a certain degree of violence) without letting you the opportunity to save your progress ?

CALIBLAZE, what kind of mental problems are you talking about ? Game addiction ?

I think someone becomes a game addict when playing games has become so vital that there is no more fun to it.

Is an 18-years-old person necessarily more mature than a 17-years-old one ? Why do we consider adults to be more apt to play violent games than minors ?

By the way, the topic isn't limited to heavy physical violence (like shouting people). It could be psychological violence, like bullying others, or social violence, like when you become so much possessive that you do not want to share your games with others. There is also self-harm, which is when you hurt yourself.

hmm yeah something like game addiction xD

i think kids sometimes make what they see in games , most of all those games that they have violency

I really think that this theory is ridiculous. Sure kids would reenact what they see in video games, some being mildly violent (Such as Wrestling if they don't know it's staged,) but the adults believe that war games such as battlefield and Call of Duty will make kids to do what they see in those games; I think that is idiotic! Where I live, there are several deaths that go around, and nothing shows any proof of it involving video games, they mostly gang-related. Sure there are games such as Mario, Pokemon, WWE, and other games that kids reenact, but they wouldn't go over the limit by becoming a sycopath just because they play FPS games. I don't play the games myself, nor am I a fan of them, but I think people take this theory way too far.

If I am wrong, then it's up to the parents/guardians to keep their children from causing such acts by being aware what these game contain before they're purchased. If I argued with the people who believe this theory, then they should consider looking at the ratings, they're there for a reason; it's to avoid kids that are under-aged to see such content. Kids around their teen age (Maybe younger) would clearly understand that it would be idiotic to do what is seen in COD or Battlefield, that only madmen and twisted people would do such a thing. The closest kids and teens would most possiblt come to guns would be bb guns or paintballs, not the real thing.

Whew... I'll just stop there.

Basically, what you are saying is that players can recognise what's right and what's wrong, so they won't mistake fiction for reality. If they can't, then their parents would prevent them from playing the game.

1) While this might be true for kids, it isn't for adults. When an adult still can't differentiate between right and wrong, then nobody can stop him from playing a violent game, as he does not necessarily live with his parents anymore.
2) Kids, particularly teenagers, always find ways to have what they want, even if it is illegal for their age. One example of this is alcohol. Therefore, rating games will not necessarily prevent kids from playing them.
3) Parents can't always be there to stop their kids from playing violent games, like when they are playing at their older friends' homes.

And now we got a nice discussion xD

Actually it's still the person himself who chooses what he does/how long he plays/what he plays.
He will see the consequences anyway no matter what he does
